Graphic Illustration

With the 5th graders at Highlands Elementary I decided to focus on the difference between realistic illustration and graphic illustration. I used samples of the artist Romero Britto. His art is the ideal example for kids to understand the concept of bold and graphic. To help the kids keep the idea of simple and bold graphics I asked them to create their drawing in masking tape on their paper first. Once they had their tape down they were able to paint in sections of color and patterns. The results were so fantastic!

Funky Forest

I was trying to think of a fun lesson for the 3rd grade classes at HIghlands Elementary when I came across this image of a "Yarn Bombed" tree. I loved the patterns and colors! I decided that this would be a great lesson on inspiration and how we can see everyday objects differently. In other words...think outside the box.
I showed this image to the class and talked about how we might translate this image to an illustration. Below is the work that the kids did. It was a really great project using sharpie, gauche and a lot of creative imagination.
