My kids school is having their annual auction and needless to say when they told me the theme was "Dr. Seuss" I just about flipped!

I had the kraft colored paper mache pots from a craft swap, the green stems are very large Halloween spiders (Super clearance at Target) and the top is of course the feather boa.Add in some masking tape and spray paint and VOILA!

I will be making this smaller table top ones and also some large ones. I'll post more pictures of the decor as I get it created.

Fall is here! That means tons of crafty options and that holiday crafts are just around the corner! These fall leaves are your basic coffee filters cut into leaf shapes. Draw some lines on the leaves with a crayon and drip some liquid water color on them. Viola! You have a great garland that will last from September through November! I stapled these leaves to a piece of oatmeal colored yarn.

If you have ever been to one of my classes or even happen to slightly know me, you will most likely know that I TRULY believe that glitter makes everything better!

This week with my Creative Kids we are making picture frames. I was doing this frame with my buddy Sage today. He had "messed up" and was a bit frustrated. I decided that I "messed up" too and voila! Who knew scribbles could be so stylish? After I finished my scribbling I felt the frame was calling- ok screaming- for glitter. Once the glitter and glue dries on this frame I will be covering it in a 2 part epoxy along with

all the other masterpieces made today. (Dear Parents, I will not subject your children to the exposure of epoxy. I do that in my home studio where I only suffer the brain damage. Not your kids. Aren't I so nice? and thoughtful? ok, kind of sweet too?)

What do you do when you marry into the name "Weiner"? YOU OWN IT! I got to design this shirt for a soon-to-be bride to wear at her bachelorette party.All the bridesmaids will be wearing the hotdog graphic as well. I LOVE a challenge! I can't wait to hear the reaction to the shirts.

Relief Printing

When I meet a young artist that loves drawing I can hardly wait to show them all the various printing methods they can use to print their illustrations. My little friend Tessa is a HUGE fan of drawing and this relief printing project was great for her. She is only 7 and already has quite an art style.

This technique is done by drawing on a piece of styrofoam with a ball point pen and using block printing ink to print. Great for greeting cards, art prints and all ages too!

Magnet Madness!

I recently went on vacation for a week up in Canada. What better to do outside by the lake than CRAFT?! My kids, husband, 2 nieces, mother-in-law and great Aunt even got into the magnet project. We did bottle caps and wood plaques. To finish them I filled and coated them with a 2 part epoxy. Can't wait to make these in class with my 6-10 year olds!

It's far more fun to decorate a shirt for the 4th than it is to buy one pre-printed. This week the kids and I made firework shirts. I was SO excited to see the outcome. Every shirt turned out unique and all of them looked like fabulous fireworks.The fireworks were painted by twisting 5 pipe cleaners together and dipping them in the paint like a rubber stamp.We also used assorted foam stamps.

I do believe I just might bring this craft to our Fourth of July pot-luck instead of a salad.

3 Hens and a Peacock

I read the book "Three Hens and a Peacock" by Lester L. Laminack to my kids one night and thought, WE HAVE TO MAKE PEACOCKS! This story is really witty and who could resist a peacock craft?! I did some research and quickly discovered that peacocks kind of get the short-stick in the craft world. I think we did the beautiful bird justice and the kids had a great time too!

Rainbow Fish

Often I see die-cut shapes at stores and think, hmmm...what would I do with that? When I spotted this fish shape I HAD to have them! This was great for all levels. The little guys started with paint daubers and added tissue paper scales and of course sequins. (I HEART sequins!) The older kids did the paper marbling technique and added sequins and scales to compliment their brilliant designs.

If you know the book "Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister the theme of this craft make look familiar. Notice the little blue fish with one shiny scale? It's a great at-home craft too!

This is a project I do with the kids explaining how random objects can become art. It's the introduction to recycled art and a great book to compliment all of it is "Beautiful Oops!" by Barney Saltzberg.

Shrinky Dinks!

Shrinky Dinks are still one of my favorite crafts to do with the 6-10 year olds. We have made many things especially jewelry and key chains. Last week was different. My buddy Raina sat down and said, "I want to make a turtle". We talked about how she might draw a turtle and different design choices and then she clarified. "I want to make a turtle that stands up". (GULP!) I thought to myself. Hmmm...why couldn't we make a turtle that stands up? TOgether we spent the class testing shrink sizes, making slots and visualizing the outcome. It was a BLAST and the outcome turned out pretty stinking cute!

Q. Will the classes run through the summer months?
A. Yes, classes will run through the summer months. We will adjust the schedule to work better for those hours and also consider adding classes as the demand shows us what times are desired.

Q. How does this work?
A. Once you have purchased the Living Social deal you can call Creative Mom Toys to reserve your space in the class time that works best for you. When you arrive for your first class we will exchange your LS voucher for a punch card.

Q. Do I have to go to 4 consecutive classes?
A. No. An additional perk to the LS deal is that you are not committed to using the 4 classes in a row. You can call us 24 hours before a scheduled class to sign up anytime in the next year. (of course we hope to see you sooner than that)

Cherry Blossoms

Today we honored Japan with our First Saturday, Arts & Crafts project. This was a great craft for all ages.

We dripped liquid watercolor on the paper in a small puddle then blew it with a straw to create the branches. The cherry blossoms were cut tissue paper and glued in the center. Paper marbling has been SO much fun! I have done this project with kids as young as 1 and all the way up. I personally enjoy it even more than the kids I think. I pulled this tutorial together so you can give it a shot at home if your are feelings crafty in a messy sort of way. Of course, you can always come join me in my classes if you prefer the mess to stay in my space not yours. :)

Handy Keepsakes

"Time flies!" It's so cliche yet SO true. We go through the haze of being new parents and before we know it we are checking out college applications. OK, maybe not quite that fast but it really does fly, doesn't it? These handy keepsakes are a great reminder of the days when our kids little hands could fit in ours. The process I like to use for this project creates a result that captures all the tiny details. Using play dough as a base and pouring plaster into the mold we can really control the outcome of the plaque. This project is really fun for the kids and the outcome is treasured by the parents.

Finger Puppets

I really try to have craft projects that have a residual value. Something that the kids can create and continue to play with or enjoy once it's dry. Finger puppets have become a favorite for all my crafty kids. This is a project that is easy for the youngest of crafters and imaginative for the oldest.

I buy fleece gloves from the $1 store and cut the fingers off to create the base for the puppets. You can theme them for holidays or just use up some of your random collage items you might have available. Use tacky glue for the best results and quickest dry time.

I realize it's a bit early to start thinking about Easter. BUT! Do you know how much I LOVE decorating easter eggs?! I mean, come on! What's not to love?! In honor of the Easter Bunny we are going to decorate and color as many Easter eggs as we can and put them in the store. After all, the bunny needs to feel right at home. Print this image out and bring your eggs to the store or drop in to the store and grab one to color. Come on, get Hoppin'! (sorry, couldn't resist)

ROMP, CLOMP, STOMP!

This craft was in Family Fun magazine and I couldn't resist doing it with the Creative Tots! Luckily I have my friend Jackie who loves shoes so she supplied all the boxes for the class. Thanks Jackie!

I made a few edits to the original recipe of this craft. First we wrapped the boxes in white butcher-like paper then cut the holes for their feet. The kids (mostly 2 years old) painted their boxes with the bingo paint daubers and added collage items for extra detail. The toe nails are sponges cut into triangle shapes. (If you buy new sponges for this be sure to let them dry out. Damp sponges don't stick or cut very well.) This craft took about 45 minutes an dried quickly. I'm already waiting for Jackie to buy more shoes so we can do it again. Ahem...Jackie?

My OH Butterfly!

One of the perks of being known for loving kids crafts is that often times people will gift me with craft items they find. Most recently my friend gave me GIANT coffee filters! Seriously, GIANT coffee filters! I could hardly wait to use them. We folded them up as if we were going to tie dye them and used liquid water color to drip on them. The finished effect had a tie dyed pattern and the kids who loaded theirs up with paint looked even better! For the body we wrapped pipe cleaners around a straw.

First Saturday Arts & Crafts!

Tomorrow is our First Saturday Arts & Crafts. Each month on the first Saturday we will be having some fun with the crafts offered in the store. This month our craft is Shrinky Dinks. Yes! The same shrinky dinks you enjoyed as a kid. Only now they come in big fancy kits (some small too) and pre-printed. I like to push the limits a bit and we will be making a 3 dimensional bird in the creative space. The cost is only $5 per crafter. If making a bird leaves you wanting more, there are plenty of choices to take home with you too!

Poor, poor forgotten blog

Ok, seriously, I am going to try a new approach to this poor forgotten blog...

As my business has grown and the opportunity to expand my business has happened I have found myself getting more and more away from invitations and falling back on my roots of providing graphic design services. I love the creative challenge that new clients bring to me and it is rewarding to be able to help them grow their business all while getting to jump into new things for myself.

I have been adding new equipment and can offer many services directly. Many times I surprise my clients when I tell them some of my capabilities. Although I would like to think that my offering of internal services is an advantage it really just comes down to me really,really liking print equipment. Some call it "asset building". I might refer to it as "collecting" but the term my mother might call it is "hoarding". Don't worry though. No missing cats in this house. Just a lot of creative possibilities!

Groomzilla

We've all heard of Bridezilla. Well, Groomzilla is what you get when you design a wedding invitation for a groom that is also in the creative industry.

Drory and Marcee were great to work with and I teased Drory about being "Groomzilla". He had very defined ideas and knew what he wanted...and what he didn't want. I think the final design is really solid and suited Marcee and Drory's wine themed wedding perfectly. (Wine themed but not too grape like and not too vine like as requested by groomzilla himself) Drory had his hand in the graphics and also used his skills to draw up the map for the direction card. I must say, Drory draws a mean map. You're hired for maps Drory!

This wrap design has been my answer to the ever-so-popular pocket fold. It's a great way to be able to customize the actual wrap and keep all the important bits and pieces where they belong too.

I've been busy,busy, busy with wedding season and things are finally slowing down a bit since all my brides and grooms are off celebrating their new lives together. That makes more time for the clients I have that aren't in the market for invitations.

This business card was for Sandy Taylor. She is a personal trainer and needed some marketing pieces for her new and quickly growing client base. Sandy specializes in training women and does private workout sessions in your home. She wanted her pieces to have a strong design but also be somewhat feminine. I even hired Sandy to whip me into shape. I'm sore just typing this.

Natalie and Jake had requested the graphic I designed for thier wedding invitations so that they could have it on their cake. Of all the interesting requests I have recieved this is definetely a first. I'm crazy about how it turned out!

I heart Natalie and Jake! This photo doesn't quite do their wedding invitations justice but I have to say that they were REALLY fun to do! Jake knew he wanted something to hold everything together and Natalie had an idea of the graphic style they were looking for. All the pieces came together and I was able to design a small pocket to hold everything together and fit into a standard A2 envelope. I really like the smaller size and look forward to playing with the pocket concept more.

Baby Shower Favors

Since Ellie (the dog) is an important member of the family we decided that it was important that she was included in the baby shower celebration. All of the shower favors were sugar cookies shaped like dog bones with a topper stating Ellie's appreciation. Of course it was signed "Big Sis".

Just a side note. Baby Grace (the human) has since entered the world and Ellie is adjusting perfectly to her new role.

Save-the-Date magnets are popular these days. As a big fan of refrigerator magnets I always tend to agree that sending out magnets is a great idea. I did these magnets for Brooke and Kyle attached to a card announcing their date and accommodation info. Brooke also chose to do a matching postcard (inset). It was fun to do something as casual as a magnet but spicing it up a bit by using some specialty stock and some Victorian inspired graphics.

Wedding Show- Day 2

WOW! What an experience to stand for 2 days and talk to literally 1,000s of people.

I met so many great people and today was a much steadier pace so I had a chance to really chat about ideas and details with a lot of brides and even some grooms. My favorite was to see some of the brides back again today after doing the show yesterday too! You are SUPER troopers! I'm already getting a lot of inquiries from all of you so I will be in touch as I work my way through the e-mails (and soak my feet!).

Wedding Show- Day 1

Well, well, well, after much planning and even more anticipation the wedding show has finally hit. I couldn't have asked for a better turn out to my booth and I met some really fantastic people! I'm looking forward to finishing up the show tomorrow and getting my scheduling done so I can get some really great projects going.

Seattle Wedding Show

WOW! The holidays are coming in no time and right after them is the Seattle Wedding Show! (January 5-6) This will be my first time showing at the Seattle Wedding Show. I've mostly stuck to smaller venues that are not specific to the wedding industry. I am really looking forward to the experience of 10,000 people all planning weddings. Some call me "crazy" but I prefer to think of it as "adventurous".

Actually, Happy Wedding!

Jamie and Matt had the ultimate themed wedding! There was no holding back on details for this happy couple! When I met with Matt and Jamie they had some very strong design elements they wanted to incorporate into their invitations. Matt had created an illustration of the two of them and he had also brought me the really cool (yet spooky) scroll graphic. I LOVED it all!

I did a tonal spider web graphic on the front with the couple illustration. On the inside I added the spider web graphic behind the text and a really ornate font was chosen for the "RSVP" to compliment the script text. All these elements plus a few extra spooky details worked like a charm.

Jamie and Matt also had magnets designed for wedding favors.

Orchids or BUST!

Ellen and Todd were SO great to work with! I met with Ellen and she had a great color palette for her big day (rich red and light blue) and she had mentioned that she was having orchids for the ceremony. With her color palette, some examples of things she liked and the mention of orchids my creative juices were brewing. Once I got the illustration of the orchid hammered out things really flowed together. I had a lot of fun designing several coordinating pieces in addition to the invitations. We did save-the-dates, announcements, programs and wine labels.

The bottom left corner shows the back of the invite and RSVP. We were able to run a flood of red with some tonal graphics to really push the color theme.

Fifty is Nifty!

When Tara called to say Josie wanted to have her birthday at the bowling alley I was REALLY excited! Who doesn't love a 50's theme?!

We went with a retro pink and black color pallette and added some green to spice it up a bit. The back of this invite also has detail. It's a tone on tone pattern that added just that little extra touch of niftiness.

I love adding detail to the back of invites. On this birth announcement for Aubrey the back was a soft sage green and worked nicely with the pink on the front. I'd like to think it's the back detail that makes this announcement so sweet...I'm sure it has nothing to do with the picture of sweet little Aubrey on the front.

Garden Party

Tara usually gives me a call for an event, throws a theme out there and says "Do what you do". She is one brave soul!

For Gracie's birthday Tara decided it was going to be a garden theme and Gracie's Grandma inspired the dragonfly. The wings of the dragon fly are printed on vellum and adhered only at the base to give a little flutter here and there.

I've been having a blast doing more than just invitations. I get a little tingle when a client says "We were wondering...". Wonder away my fabulous clients! I love to mix it up!

Here is a wine label I did for Dawn and Glen. Their wedding day was 7/7/07 and they did a super hip "Happy Lucky Triple Seven" theme. The decor was asian inspired and the wine labels fit right in on the black, gold and red dressed tables with mini take out box favors at each place setting.
